How can we provide affordable housing for the 1.6 billion people who need it?
In response to the global housing crisis, my research on behalf of the Aydelott Foundation focused on understanding how to provide quality affordable housing that residents are proud to call home. I was equally as interested in the architecture of a single dwelling as I was in the layout of the entire community. Through my research, I came to discover that both have a profound impact on the success of an affordable housing project.
My interest in low-cost housing began at Auburn University’s Rural Studio, where I was introduced to the 20k project - an initiative to develop high-quality homes that can be purchased for $20,000. My work on affordable housing continued in the summer of 2016, when I received funding from the Aydelott Foundation to carry out my proposal for an in-depth study of four affordable housing projects in targeted regions of the globe. Today, I continue to build upon the findings from that summer as I work to understand how to design affordable housing for the 1.6 billion people who need it.
