Nakasero Market
Summer 2020 | Kampala, Ugandainstructed by Doreen Adengo

How can we use tactical design interventions to promote health and safety at Nakasero Market during the coronavirus pandemic?
Applying principles of tactical urbanism, this project proposes practical, small-scale interventions to limit contact at Kampala’s Nakasero Market. These interventions take the form of a hand-washing and produce-cleansing station, a contactless exchange system for vendors, and a playful (but practical) social distancing hat.
This work was completed in partnership with Rachel Madryga and Christine DeGuzman.

This collection of work was produced for the Summer 2020 Global Urbanism Studio facilitated by Jonathan Stitelman and Derek Hoeferlin at Washington University in St. Louis. Projects were developed during week-long workshops directed by visiting urbanists and designers from around the globe. The works compiled here follow the theme “Resilient Adaptations” and adopt a common strategy of using the location’s existing assets to respond to immediate crises as well as future challenges.
