How can we aid the landowners in transitioning this agricultural property into an educational campus while preserving the ranch’s character and wild lands?


Blaze Ranch is a 100-acre property in the Texas hillcountry, in an area on the outskirts of Austin that is quickly developing. As neighboring ranches are sold off to developers and converted into suburban housing tracts, the owners of Blaze Ranch are seeking to preserve their property’s wilderness status while converting the use from agricultural to educational. The ranch will be home to a non-profit school serving local day students as well as boarders from rural communities who don’t have access to world-class educational opportunities in their area. The school is set to welcome its first class in 2023.


Marina Recio Rodriguez, Morgan Vought, and I were brought on to assist the landowners in envisioning the future of the ranch, providing design direction and land management strategies to help them steward this beautiful property.

How can we heal the scars of urban highway construction while reimagining a more equitable use of valuable land currently dedicated to the automobile?

The Twin Cities Parkway is a phased proposal to graft the neighborhoods along I-94 back together through a site-sensitive and community-based redesign of the highway corridor between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Rather than just moving cars, the Twin Cities Parkway prioritizes moving people while also offering life-giving spaces that provide housing, parks and greenspaces, food and energy production, and other valuable social and ecosystem services to the community. In doing so, the Twin Cities Parkway begins to repair the laceration made by I-94 fifty years past. In the interstate’s place, a new type of mobility infrastructure is grown, one that stores carbon instead of emits, connects rather than divides, purifies rather than pollutes, calms rather than congests, and heals rather than hurts. The Twin Cities Parkway proposal represents what we’ve learned and how we’ve progressed in the fifty years since we first allowed our cities to be rent asunder by urban highways.

How can the northeast transition to sustainable food production and support farmers, create green jobs, and combat climate change in the process?


In a part of the country where farming is central to the region’s heritage, farmers are facing increased pressures from a changing climate and a failing economic model. The Harvest Trail responds by linking these agricultural landscapes, connecting farmers to workers, and ultimately, people to their food. A new Work &#38;amp; Hike labor program enables migrant workers to secure jobs and housing along the 700-mile trail, providing farmers with an accessible and affordable source of labor. A corps of Havest Trail workers is enlisted to construct the trail and its supporting infrastructures, including a team of trail cultivators that will grow edible plants along the trail using permaculture techniques, increasing the productivity of wild and residual spaces while encouraging a culture of foraging.&#38;nbsp; Together, these interventions will provide an estimated 1,750 green jobs while simultaneously increasing regional food production, combating climate change, boosting rural economies, and equipping the next generation with useful skills for the global change era.

How can we ensure that the walking, creeping, and crawling residents of Los Angeles all have their place in the city?


This project seeks to design a more hospitable and inclusive urban environment in Los Angeles, a city seemingly designed with only one inhabitant in mind - the automobile. In contrast to the pervasive car-dominated landscape of Los Angeles, this project foregrounds other mobility modes - crawling, slithering, bounding, scurrying, and walking - to create an urban environment that is both welcoming and wild.&#38;nbsp;A series of wildlife patches, corridors, and crossings makes the first gesture in welcoming back to the city this land’s original inhabitants. An infrastructural approach of rewilding and reweaving knits the city’s more-than-human residents together, fostering a spirit of kinship and an ethic of care that ensures walking, creeping, and crawling Angelenos all have their place in the city. 

This is accomplished through the construction of a wildlife crossing at the northeast corner of Griffith Park, where Interstate 5 and Highway 134 intersect with the Los Angeles River and Verdugo Wash. Unlike conventional wildlife crossings that manifest themselves in a singular land bridge, this Griffith Crossing gives value to the specific movements of area fauna and provides multiple threads of connection that are each sensitive to the diverse micro- and macro-habitat needs of their animal users. These wild threads connect Griffith Park and the greater Santa Monica Mountain region to three proposed wildlife corridors – a revitalized Los Angeles River, a naturalized Verdugo Wash, and a rewilded powerline corridor – that will ultimately link Los Angeles’ major wilderness areas together across the metropolitan region. In addition, the Griffith Crossing provides human connection to Griffith Park from Glendale and other adjoining neighborhoods currently separated from the park by the Los Angeles River and twenty-nine lanes of highway traffic. Carefully designed sectional relationships along the crossings provide opportunities for close encounters between human and animal species in settings that are both urban and wild, further weaving the previously disparate threads into a new, rewilded Los Angeles.&#38;nbsp;

South Boston sits on constructed land, a layering of soils, sands, concrete, and wood that forms a mass to support the modern infrastructures of the past three centuries. Roads and rail lines have dictated not only how we move around the city, but also what form the city takes. During the pandemic, these movements were changed drastically. As many of the city’s residents stayed home and had goods delivered to their doors, online retailers like Amazon profited at the expense of overbooked delivery workers. Given these conditions, this project takes a closer look at Amazon’s logistics operations and asks how a deep reading of the land, and a potential unraveling of the historic infrastructures of the city, can make way for new, equitable, sustainable, and resilient forms of collective living in the near-future city.

Guiding this project is a Manual of Care: care for the ground, the worker, the resident, and the non-human. Proposed Care Stations reconfigure the urban assemblage to create new infrastructures that leverage Amazon’s success into greater care for South Boston, from the microbiota living in the soil to the children playing in the street to the delivery worker making their rounds through the neighborhood.

Exchange Stations allow the functions of delivery and waste removal to be decoupled from the residential street, opening up new possibilities for the spaces between dwellings while also reducing the burden on the delivery worker. 


ReCreation Stations continue the process of landmaking by liberating the ground from its asphalt coverings, allowing healthy soils, natural hydrologies, and human and non-human residents to reclaim land that had been given over to global logistics in decades past. 


Energy Stations recharge the soil and offer rest to essential workers and residents while also accomplishing an urban system that does not rely on extraction and exploitation of remote landscapes.

These reconfigurations allow an alternative vision of collective form to emerge in South Boston, one in which the logistical unit shifts from the individual residence to the neighborhood block, helping distribute labor and care more equally among workers and residents.
